Gabriel Alegria & the Afro Peruvian Sextet with special guests Arturo O’Farrill and members of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Diablo en Brooklyn epitomizes the diversity of South Brooklyn as a beacon of hope in our society. The piece carefully melds multi cultural and multi ethnic elements from zapateo (tap) dance, modern choreography and the masked tradition of Son de los Diablos from Peru. A high energy execution of African rhythms from coastal Perú constitutes the centerpiece of the performance. The musicians and dancers use the quijada (jaw bone of a donkey), the Peruvian cajón (box drum) and the choreography includes passages of zapateo dancing in performance.
